dc.description.abstract-translated | In the Czech Republic, Bulgarian (and Balkan) studies have been tradition- ally pursued in departments of philology. In this country, knowledge about the life and culture of the Balkan countries has typically been gained through focus on the language and literature of particular language areas. The opposite approach, in which the interest in a region’s culture motivates the interest in learning the language, is still comparatively rare. The paper focuses on the establishment of this anthropological approach in the Czech Republic, mainly at the Department of Anthropology at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. An informal group of Balkan-oriented researchers was established at this department and operated for almost a decade. In its heyday, it attracted the attention not only of students of the Balkan region in the Czech Republic, but also of those abroad. The authors summarize the history of this research group and its activities from its establishment in approximately 2005 until its decline a decade later. | en |
